TurbAero’s Small Turbine Update

TurbAero, an Australian company with footprints in the U.S. and Canada, is continuing work on its small regenerative turbine for light experimental aircraft. At Sun ‘n Fun, we talked to TurbAero’s Berni Breen and learned that the company is cutting metal and on the verge of assembling a running prototype. If the schedule holds, we’ll see that next year at Sun ‘n Fun and flight article by AirVenture.

Aithre’s Healthview Multifunction Display

Aithre Aviation has been sharply focused on smart cabin biometric products and this year at the Sun ‘n Fun Aerospace Expo in Lakeland, Florida, it brought its latest product called Healthview. The first of its kind, and approved for all Part 23 (including pressurized) aircraft, Healthview monitors a wide range of pilot and passenger health stats, and also automatically controls the company’s built-in oxygen system. In this video recorded for our sister publication Aviation Consumer, Larry Anglisano takes a close look at the Healthview with Aithre’s Jim Ruttler in the company Van’s RV-10.

Meet the Aeropup USA Lightweight LSA Bushplane

At Sun ‘n Fun 2023, we checked in with Don Fielden, who is bringing in the Australian-created Aeropup. With a base kit price of $18,000, the Aeropup USA is among the less expensive two-seat high-wing utility kits on the market. The Aeropup can use a range of engines, though the American prototype is getting a 130-hp ULPower engine. Here’s more about the airplane from Dan Fielden.

CubCrafters Unveils the New Carbon Cub UL

One of the most long lived LSA designs is CubCrafters’ Carbon Cub. From the outset, it has been a light, well-powered design and now, the company is upping the ante again. At Sun ‘n Fun 2023, it took the wraps off the Carbon Cub UL powered by Rotax’s new 916 iS engine at 160-hp. In this video, CubCrafters’ Brad Damm explains what the airplane is all about. And one thing it’s about is the ability to burn unleaded, lower octane fuel.

Shane Woodson breaks down where uAvionix is with the development of the AV-30 and its other avionics/lighting products in this video from Sun ‘n Fun 2023. Still in process: Autopilot functionality for legacy autopilots (think S-Tec), ARINC 429 connectivity to make an IFR-capable HSI in the AV-30 and other products. The AV-30 was recently updated to use an external magnetometer and can drive a digital autopilot in Experimental aircraft.

We caught up with Chip Erwin at Sun ‘n Fun 2023 to talk about the V-twin Aeromarine engine, a modified powersports four-stroke, fuel-injected engine fitted to the Merlin LSA and available for other Experimentals. The V-twin is based on a popular powersports engine and drives a propeller through a belt reduction drive.

It’s a pricey and time-consuming effort that many shops outsource or take a long time to do themselves.
